What is Somatic Inquiry?

There's a kind of knowing that doesn't happen in your head. Somatic inquiry is a way of turning toward your body directly, not to analyze it, but to actually listen to what it's been holding and carrying.

A Mind-Based World

Most of us were taught, in ways direct and indirect, that the mind runs the show. We're rewarded for analyzing, explaining, and figuring things out, and very rarely taught to actually feel what's happening in our own bodies while we do it. Over time, that creates a kind of disconnection: a life lived mostly from the neck up, with the body treated as something to manage, optimize, or override rather than listen to.

This isn't a problem with the mind itself. Your capacity to think, analyze, and understand is genuinely valuable — it's not something to abandon or distrust. The issue is incompleteness, not hierarchy. Mind and body aren't separate systems competing for control; they're one integrated whole, constantly in conversation, whether we're aware of it or not. Somatic inquiry isn't about dethroning the mind in favor of the body. It's about bringing every part of that system — thought, sensation, emotion, impulse — into the conversation, so none of it is working in isolation or being talked over by the others.

What Is Somatic Inquiry?

Somatic inquiry is a body-oriented practice built around conversation with the body itself. Rather than talking about what you're feeling, you learn to slow down and listen to it, noticing sensation, tension, ease, and the messages underneath them. It's a process of learning, connecting, understanding, and softening what's been held in the body, often outside conscious awareness.

This isn't about forcing release or chasing a specific outcome. Sometimes that listening leads to movement — a shake, a shift, a discharge of energy that's been stored. Sometimes it leads simply to more clarity, more ease, or a felt sense of being more at home in your own body. Both are part of the process.

Why Somatic Inquiry?

Many of us move through life in some version of fight, flight, or freeze without fully realizing it. That ongoing state of alert or shutdown can show up as anxiety, tension, exhaustion, or a sense of being disconnected from your own body. Somatic inquiry offers a way to meet that state directly — not by thinking your way out of it, but by building a different relationship with it.

How It Works

In a session, we work together to slow down and bring attention to what's happening in your body right now — sensation, breath, posture, impulse. You're guided to notice what's there without rushing to fix or explain it. Over time, this builds your capacity to stay present with difficult sensations and emotions rather than around them, which is often where real shift happens.

This is relational work. I'm tracking with you throughout — not directing your body toward a predetermined outcome, but helping you stay connected to what's actually arising and supporting you in following it.

Where This Comes From

Somatic inquiry sits within a broader field of body-based approaches to stress and nervous system regulation — work that includes modalities like Somatic Experiencing, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. These approaches share a common philosophy: that the body holds its own intelligence about stress and survival responses, and that healing happens through the body, not just through talking about it. Somatic inquiry draws on that shared lineage while remaining its own distinct practice.
