Tracking Your Menstrual Cycle: Aligning with Your Natural Rhythms

Welcome, love! If you’re feeling curious about how to begin tracking your menstrual cycle or how to work with it in a deeper, more intentional way, you're in the right place. Whether you're new to menstrual cycle awareness or have been exploring it for a while, it’s never too late to begin this sacred journey.

Tracking your cycle is a powerful tool for understanding your energy, emotions, and creative flow. The best place to start? With the first day of your bleed—Day 1. If you don’t bleed, the next best thing is to start with the new moon.

How to Get Started

Start tracking on the first day of your menstrual bleed. This marks Day 1, and from there, you'll continue day by day. If you're not currently menstruating, don’t worry! You can follow the lunar cycle, using the new moon as your starting point. It’s simple: mark the day of the new moon as Day 1 and begin tracking from there.

Why Now is the Perfect Time

At the time I’m writing this, we’re in Spring, so now is an ideal time to start tracking, especially if you’ve felt called to begin aligning with your cycle. You could also consider starting fresh at the next new moon, but if you’re ready, you can always trace back to the previous one and begin your journey from there.

As we enter the year of the snake, a time of transformation and shedding old skins, menstrual cycle awareness can be the perfect tool to release what no longer serves you. This is an invitation to honor the natural ebb and flow of your body’s rhythm, helping you step into a new phase of alignment.

The Four Phases of Your Cycle

Whether you’re working with your menstrual cycle or the lunar cycle, there are four distinct phases that mirror the changing seasons. Let's dive into them:

1. New Moon / Menstruation Phase (Winter)

This phase marks the beginning and the end. It’s a time for visioning, reflection, and, yes, rest. Just like winter, it’s a time for clearing out old energy, letting go of what’s no longer serving you, and making space for new beginnings. While the new moon might feel like a clean slate, it’s also a moment to pause, shed what’s no longer needed, and prepare for what’s to come.

During menstruation, your body is energetically low, and your hormones are at their lowest. Rest is essential here, and I recommend honoring that need. You might find that this phase aligns with introspection, deep reflection, and allowing your inner wisdom to guide you.

2. Waxing Moon / Follicular Phase (Spring)

As your energy begins to rise and estrogen starts to build, this phase is akin to spring, full of new potential and growth. This is the time to plan, organize, and start working toward new ideas or opportunities that surfaced during the new moon phase.

This is also when you may feel like socializing or diving into new projects. However, remember that spring can be unpredictable. Just like the weather—sunshine one minute, rain the next—you might experience fluctuations in your energy. Don’t push yourself too hard during this phase; instead, balance your efforts with rest.

3. Full Moon / Ovulation Phase (Summer)

The full moon is the culmination of energy, and it’s mirrored by the ovulation phase in your menstrual cycle. This is the peak of your creative power, where you might feel more connected with others, more open to new experiences, and more willing to put yourself out there.

It’s a potent time for launching projects, asking for what you need (like a raise or a new opportunity), and expressing your full self. You might find that you’re more social, outgoing, and confident. However, if you overdo it, this energy can feel overwhelming. Pay attention to your emotional needs, as this is also a time when PMS and mood swings can manifest if you’re not in tune with your body’s rhythm.

4. Waning Moon / Luteal Phase (Autumn)

The luteal phase is connected to the waning moon and the season of autumn. This is when things start to wind down, and your body may naturally crave rest and rejuvenation. It’s a time to slow down, reflect on the work you’ve done, and release what you no longer need.

During this phase, you might feel the pull to be more introspective, cozy up, and practice gratitude. This can also be a time of emotional depth and personal transformation. If you're working on any aspect of your healing journey, this is a great time to finalize your plans, clear up any lingering doubts, and start letting go of old patterns.

Aligning with Your Own Rhythms

Remember, your cycle is unique to you, and it’s important to honor your own personal experiences and rhythms. What works for one person might not work for you. I encourage you to experiment, listen to your body, and adjust as needed.

For me, I’ve learned that some phases require more rest than I initially thought, and that’s okay. It’s all about finding what feels right for you. Trust that your body knows exactly what it needs and when it needs it.

Practical Tips for Tracking Your Cycle

Tracking your cycle doesn’t have to be complicated. Start simple—write down the first day of your period (or the new moon), and begin tracking how you feel each day. Note your energy levels, emotional state, mental clarity, and any shifts in creativity or focus. Over time, you’ll notice patterns that will help you work with your cycles instead of against them.

You can also use tools like a menstrual cycle tracking app, a moon journal, or even a regular planner. The key is consistency and observation.
