Starting Over: A Guide to Embracing New Beginnings and Creating the Life You Desire

Starting over is a question that many people find themselves asking, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic and the realization that certain aspects of our lives aren't working as we had hoped. The mental health crisis we face is prompting us to seek alternative ways of living in this modern world, in the pursuit of something new and better. But how do we begin anew, especially if we don't want to return to where we were before? How do we start from square one after investing years or even decades in a life we now wish to escape?

Personally, I have embarked on numerous fresh starts throughout my life. Growing up in a military family, I frequently found myself in new environments, having to make friends and adapt to new worlds time and again. When I arrived in Sacramento, CA thirteen years ago with just a few boxes and an acceptance letter to Sacramento State, I started building a new life from scratch. Although I have remained in Sacramento since then, I have experienced holistic healing and transformation over the years. After leaving one career path, I ventured into the fitness industry, only to see my first business, Resolute Circles Group, crumble when the pandemic hit. It was then that I had to rebuild not only my business but also my circle of friends and family. One could say that I have become an expert at starting over, and through it all, I have learned the importance of following one's heart.

I would like to share three guiding principles that have been crucial in every fresh start I've undertaken, whether it involved changing careers, improving relationships, enhancing health, or navigating a transition period:

1. Get Support: Just as a new neural pathway in the brain requires a layer of fat to grow, humans also need proper support to facilitate growth. The form of support varies for each individual, ranging from working with a coach, seeking accountability from a friend, or finding a community of like-minded individuals on a similar path. Personally, I have sought and continue to seek various forms of support. The more support we have, the better equipped we are to grow and flourish. However, understanding the type of support we need can only be achieved once we know and understand ourselves, leading us to the next principle.

2. Know Thyself: What drives you? What ignites your soul? Why do you desire to start over? Understanding these aspects of yourself is crucial to embarking on a new journey, and it can only be achieved through self-reflection and inner work. Often, we seek answers outside of ourselves, hoping for quick fixes or a set of steps to achieve our dream life. However, true realization and answers can only be found within. By reflecting on our past experiences, lessons learned, and personal growth, we gain a deeper understanding of our desires, what has worked for us in the past, and what no longer serves us. If we find ourselves disconnected from self-knowledge, it's time to move on to the final principle.

3. Try New Things: All the practices and experiences that bring me the most fulfillment and joy today began as unfamiliar and perhaps even strange ventures. Had I not overcome resistance and listened to that small voice within, I would never have discovered the transformative power of hula hooping, breathwork, or aligning my life with the moon phases. Each time I embraced the unknown, I found myself moving closer to my authentic self. However, as adults, we often resist trying new things due to fears of not being good enough or the fear of making mistakes in our quest for self-discovery.

If you've reached a turning point in your life that has inspired you to make a change, it indicates that your previous path is no longer fulfilling. How can you start over without exploring new possibilities? If your heart is urging you to book that retreat, enroll in that training program, move to a new city, embrace it and remain open to the unfolding of your new life.

Starting over is not easy. It requires time, patience, resilience, and an abundance of love and trust. Making the decision to quit a job, end a relationship, or create positive changes in your life is just the first step. The real work begins afterward. However, with support, self-awareness, and a willingness to try new things, the journey becomes more manageable.

Remember, you have the strength within you to start over and create the life you desire. Trust the process and believe in your ability to navigate this new chapter with grace and resilience.
